Why use a transmission?

Electric motors offer a wide torque curve compared to IC engines but their efficiency reduces significantly outside the 'sweet spot' of the speed range. For this reason (and others), a transmission is still beneficial on all but the smallest of electric vehicles.

A transmission offers the following overall benefits:

• The Motor operates in its most efficient speed range, increasing vehicle range and reducing cooling requirements.
• A smaller electric motor can be specified.
• Allows greater flexibility of motor supplier selection.
• Vehicle launch performance and cruising speed is improved
